Today is my mama's birthday!! Mom and dad started off her b-day in Las Vegas and then got back to Texas around 1p.m. Garrett and I spent most of the morning making these...
Yummy homemade chocolate chip cookies with not so homemade cream cheese filling. My mom would probably trade me for a giant chocolate chip cookie so we decided to make these instead of a cake. Mom and dad got home and brought these funny looking glasses which I of course put on Sophie
I am so lucky that my sweet pup is a good sport! I am glad my roommates are home! I made the mistake of watching two episodes of the American Horror Story on FX two nights ago before going to bed and now this house creeps me out. Garrett is home for mom's birthday and we have been hanging out together most of the day. I am just trying to soak up as much time with my family and friends before my journey. Ashley, Samantha, Courtney, and I went to eat last night and Courtney and I are going to Worldfest in Addison after church tomorrow. There are times when I am constantly around those I love that I think "What the heck am I doing moving so far away??" but I know that God put this opportunity in my life for a reason and I intend on exploring it!! In two weeks my mom, Sophie, and I will be in Anchorage!! The weather calls for snow flurries today in Homer!
Til we meet again...

It is getting close!!
I leave in a little over 2 weeks!!
My wonderful dad bought mom a ticket to help me move up there! We leave DFW on November 5, 2011 at 5:30 a.m., have a layover in Chicago, and then arrive in Anchorage around 2p.m. We are staying the night at the Millennium Alaskan Hotel in Anchorage that night and we are going to secure a car and go shopping for some winter clothes and apartment essentials. I am so glad she is going! I know that dad bought her plane ticket for her birthday but it is even more of a present to me!! This move would be extra hard if I had to go alone. On Sunday (November 6, 2011), mom and I are going to drive 4 hours south to my new town, Homer, Ak! She is staying with me until Thursday (November 10, 2011) and then I am driving her back to Anchorage.
More good news: Amy Still is flying up and spending Thanksgiving with me!! I am so very lucky to have people in my life who care enough about me to come all the way to Alaska for me! She is coming the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and staying until the Monday after! I am so excited!!
I have 7 more days left of work and I am trying to stay motivated but it is very difficult. Mom and Dad are in Las Vegas right now and I am left home with a mountain of cases to close! Something is not right about that...
The weather is gorgeous in Texas right now (in the 60-70s during the day). I think Texas is trying to convince me to stay! Also the Texas Rangers just won game two of the World Series!!! We are now tied with the Cardinals!! I need to see my team win the World Series before I leave! GO RANGERS!
Love, Lauren

Getting Ready
Hey y'all!
I decided to start a blog because I am moving from the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas to Homer, Alaska at the beginning of November!! I figured that this would be the best way to update my family and friends with what's going on up north. So I will try my best to keep up with it :)
So I took a job working for the Office of Children's Services in Homer as a Social Worker and I am very excited about the position. It will be a lot like CPS in Texas except fewer cases and better pay! Taking this position has been a big leap of faith for me and there are days when I wonder what the heck I have gotten myself into. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I know that I will always have a safe place to land.
Why Alaska?
The common question that I get is "why did you pick Alaska?" I always answer it differently but I think the main reason is that I chose it because it was completely different from Texas. Maybe it was this dry, disgustingly hot summer we just endured but something about living on the coast and having a background of mountains and green sounds so appealing. Please don't get me wrong, I LOVE TEXAS and it will always be my home. But I am young and do not have any attachments holding me down from doing something crazy such as moving 4000+ miles from home. I also get asked why didn't I chose to live in another county and my answer to that is that I love living in the United States and I love visiting other countries. It is my goal to see most of the world before I die, but I always want to live in the good ole USA. I will miss everyone incredibly and I will let anyone who wants to visit stay with me :)
So yes, I am used to "Texas snow", I have only one pair of boots and they are heels, and I have never lived in a town that does not have a Walmart, but it is an adventure. And it is the adventure that I crave.
